Indy CARES Intake Requests
Due to a significant increase in requests, response times may take several days. Email is the only way to request assistance or an intake appointment. Please do not come to the shelter without a confirmed appointment.
To request help, email indycares@indy.gov with details about your situation. A team member will review your request and respond as possible.
Managed Intake Status
Indianapolis Animal Care Services is currently operating over maximum capacity and is under Managed Intake.
This means:
- Appointments are required for all owner surrenders and stray animals.
- Appointments are scheduled only when space is available to safely house an animal.
- Walk-ins cannot be accommodated.
Please understand that all surrendered animals are at high risk for euthanasia due to severe space limitations. This is not a decision taken lightly, but it is the reality of our current capacity.
Considering Surrendering your Pet?
We recognize that surrendering a pet is a difficult and emotional decision.
If you are facing a temporary hardship and would prefer to keep your pet, Indy CARES may be able to help with resources such as supplies, referrals, or short-term support. To request assistance or discuss options, email indycares@indy.gov with your name, phone number, address, and a brief explanation of your situation.
Exploring support options first helps reduce shelter intake and keeps pets with their families whenever possible.
Found a Lost or Stray Pet?
IACS works to schedule intake appointments for found animals as quickly as space allows. Community cooperation is essential to divert animals from entering the shelter whenever safely possible.
If you have found a pet:
- Post the animal on Indy Lost Pet Alert and Petco Love Lost to help locate an owner.
- Email indycares@indy.gov to request an intake appointment.
If you need supplies while waiting, include that request in your email.
Holding a found pet temporarily, when safe to do so, helps save lives by reducing immediate shelter intake.
