Indy CARES was established through dedicated Indianapolis Animal Care Services employees who saw the need to do more for Indianapolis residents facing hardships forcing them away from their pets, and ultimately landing thousands of animals each year at our intake door.
Indy CARES aims to be the hub of Indianapolis pet owner resources in order to divert their animals from ending up at Indianapolis shelters, and preserving the human-animal bond by keeping pets in their homes.
Indy CARES is a program funded through the Friends of Indianapolis Animal Care Services, a 501 c(3) organization that works to help save the lives and support the welfare of our city’s shelter animals. Indianapolis Animal Care Services receives nearly 15,000 animals each year. In 2017, IACS took in 2,134 dogs and 1,753 cats who were surrendered with the top surrender reasons being housing/landlord issues, behavior, medical issues, or cost of care due to housing, behavior, or medical issues.
We believe that everyone in our community deserves the right to have a companion animal despite their level of income, or what hardship they may be facing. Indy CARES is working with other animal welfare organizations to bring together the city’s resources and educate owners on responsible pet ownership to ultimately keep more pets in their homes.
Mission: It is Indy CARES mission to empower Indianapolis pet owners to responsibly care for their companion animals by connecting individuals with community resources, education, and support.
Who we serve: We believe all Indianapolis residents deserve to experience pet ownership and it is our mission to preserve the human-animal bond by keeping pets in their home and out of the shelter.
Vision: To lower the number of animals surrendered to the shelter by working with other animal welfare organizations to bring together the city’s resources and educate owners on responsible pet ownership to ultimately keep more pets in their homes.
